How To Choose a Pond Pump

95% of Tsurumi pond pump failures are not caused by the pump failing, but rather because the pump was incorrectly sized by the pond installer. This is the correct way to size a pond pump. Tsurumi_Pond_PumpPond pumps should not be sized only on the basis of  GPH or GPM (Gallons Per Hour or Gallons Per Minute) flow conditions. The most important factor that is commonly disregarded is TDH (Total Dynamic Head). The TDH or lift on your system is crucial to sizing up a pond pump. If you chose a pump that has the correct flow without taking into account lift, you will overload the pump and cause the seals and bearings to fail, in turn causing the motor to fail. An easy way to think of TDH in regards to a pond pump is comparable to putting a 300 H.P. engine into a a go cart. All that would happen is the engine would fail due to improper sizing. Make sure that your pond installer takes into account the TDH or lift on your pond pump system.
